BUMTHANG (8530 ft)

Bumthang is often compared with Switzerland by the visitors. Some even call it the little Switzerland in Bhutan. The comparison is with its beautiful scene and cold climate.

In Bumthang, there are many historical sites. The Jakar dzong which was built in 1667, adopts a unique way of performing the Tsechu festival at night. This tradition is followed to sustain the belief of giving fertility to women wishing to have child.

Visit some of the old monasteries and receive blessings from learned lamas. The Jambay Lhakhang, Kurje Lhakhang and Tamshing Lhakhang which were built many centuries ago are considered very sacred.

Bumthang was also the home of the great saint Pemalingpa, who is believed to have discovered treasures from the bottom of a lake. The Mebar Tsho or the ‘burning lake’ is the religious site from where the treasures were discovered. The local people still pay their homage by offering butter lamps on auspicious days.

Bumthang is also famous for honey and cheese production. As a result of cold climate, apples and apricots grow well in this region. The local speciality is the hand woven Yathra (wool strips). A variety of yathra products such as; coats, rugs, blankets etc. can be purchased in Bumthang.
