The himalayan kingdom of Bhutan is a Buddhist nation.
Drukpa Kagyupa lineage of Mahayana Buddhism is followed as the state religion.

The head of the Central Monk Body is given the title as "Je Khenpo" and is ranked equally with the king.

Hinduism is also followed by some section of the population living in the southern region.

Festivals

Tshechu is the prime festival of Bhutan. The colourful festival of mask dances is held in almost every district in honor of Guru Rinpoche, the great Buddhist saint who brought Buddhism to Bhutan.

Tsechu attracts hundreds of Bhutanese people and tourist as well. People believe that enlightenment could be achieved by witnessing tshechu dances. The sight of the ‘acharas’ (traditional clown) holding a wooden phallus and entertaining the crowd always astounds a visitor.

The dzongs (fortress) are open for visitors during the tshechu festival. The marvelous Thongdels (large religious scrolls) are also displayed during the tshechu festival.  It reflects the richness of Bhutanese art.

Dzongs

The dzongs are the massive fortresses which were built many centuries ago. It served as a defensive stronghold during the times of internal rebellion and repeated Tibetan invasions. Now all the dzongs are the administrative headquarters. It is also the home of the central monk body.
