As you head towards central Bhutan, the first town to come across is Trongsa town. Trongsa was the ancestral home of the royal family and the first two monarchs ruled the country from Trongsa Dzong. The symbolic practice of holding the post of Trongsa Penlop by the crown prince prior to ascending the throne is still continued. The Fifth Druk Gyalpo, His Majesty, Jigme Khesar Namgyal Wangchuk was appointed as the Trongsa Penlop in 2004.
The huge Trongsa dzong appears very beautiful as you enter the valley and reveals its history of being a strong defensive fortress. It was built in 1644 by Chhogyel Minjur Tenpa.
The other dzong in the valley is Ta dzong. The fortress which is located just above the Trongsa dzong served as a watch tower to monitor the rebellion forces in the past. Now it is converted as the heritage museum.
