VISITING BHUTAN

Visitors must book their travel through a registered Bhutanese tour operator.
Only pre-booked travel is allowed in Bhutan at present.

 

BEST TIME TO VISIT

Visitors come to Bhutan throughout the year. However, there are high seasons and low seasons as follows:

High Season – January, February, March, April, May, June, September, October, November and December

Low Season – July and August

 

ENTERING BHUTAN

By-Air: Druk–Air is the only national carrier of Bhutan. A glimpse of the beautiful Mt.Everest makes the flight path to Bhutan the most spectacular one.

Bhutan has one airport known as the Paro International Airport at Paro. It operates to Kathmandu (Nepal), New Delhi and Kolkatta (India), Dhaka (Bangladesh), Bangkok (Thailand) and will be operating to Mumbai (India) shortly.

By-Road: The entry and exit point of Bhutan by road is through Phuentsholing in the South. Phuentsholing is the commercial hub of Bhutan and it borders with the Indian town of Jaigoan, West Bengal. The Indian airport in Bagdogra which is near to the most preferred destinations like Sikkim and Darjeeling is 170 km away from Phuentsholing. The distance from Phuentsholing to the capital city is 179 km. The travel time on the snaky mountain roads could be more than 6 hours.

WHAT TO BRING?

Druk-Air limits your luggage to 20 kg in economy class and 30 kg in business class. You should try and keep to this allowance. In case of extra luggage, your baggage would be offloaded for the next flight. It is advisable that you carry fewer luggages.

 

CLOTHINGS

It is advisable to bring appropriate clothing as temperature and climatic condition varies. You can wear casual clothing but for festivals you should carry a set of formal clothing.

Summers are cool in Bhutan and it is very cold in winter. During the day it is quite warm especially in the low lands of Punakha, Wangdue and Tongsa

ACCOMMODATIONS / MEALS

You will have a choice of resorts, hotels, lodges and guesthouses at various tourist destinations which are approved by the Department of Tourism. There are newly opened luxury resorts and hotels like Uma Paro, Amankora and Zhiwa- Ling, offering all new experiences in Bhutanese hospitality. The renowned Taj Groups of hotels would be operating shortly.    

Most of the hotels and restaurant serve cuisines like Indian, Chinese, Thai, Bhutanese and Continental. Bhutanese food is usually hot & spicy. Meals are normally served in buffet style in most of the hotels. Your other expenses will be for liquor, laundry, souvenirs and tips if you choose.
